Delighting in the Word

Psalm 1:1-6

Eating ice cream or any “comfort food” is a picture of delight. There is also delight in the heart of lovers when they talk to each other, or in receiving a gift that one has been waiting for. In regard to reading the Bible, there should be much greater delight because one is feeding on the Word and listening to the words of the Lover of his or her soul.

Jesus walked the earth. Those lived during that time were blessed to behold His glory. They lived with Him, heard His voice, ate with Him, cried and laughed with Him, and felt His heartbeat. But He is back in heaven. I have always wondered what it would be like to behold His face, to worship Him face to face. That time will come. In the meantime, I’ll try my best to know Him through His word – the Bible.

Into the Word

The psalmist makes a contrasting presentation of two kinds of life – the righteous and the wicked. The way of the former He shall bless, the latter He shall oppose and condemn. The righteous live according to God’s word, the wicked according to the counsel of the godless world. Often overlooked, however, is the “delight” that the righteous experiences in choosing God’s ways and not simply perfunctorily or obligingly. Delighting in the Word is about the happiness and sense of contentment in knowing God in His word and living out such knowledge.

The Way of the Righteous and the Wicked

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law[b] of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
